Read aloud is an essential part of our school day. The benefits of read aloud are undeniable for first graders, and these books will allow me to not only model reading strategies for the students, but teach them important life lessons. I carefully selected a wide range of books about anti-racism, gender, powerful women/girls, families, race/ethnicity, economic status, being an advocate, kids with disabilities, acceptance, immigration, and indigenous people. Through these books, the students can learn about kindness and can develop an appreciation for students of all backgrounds. My diverse students will be able to relate to the books and feel self-love and empowerment. The books will enable discussion to make our classroom community stronger. I look forward to sharing these special books with my little first graders and all future students that I have!
