Did you know, studies have shown that augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) can not only allow a non-verbal child to communicate, but also helps low-verbal children expand their language use, and allows almost every child the chance to learn symbolic comprehension and new varieties of word combinations--and don't forget emerging literacy with words labeling each symbolic image. Imagine how difficult and frustrating being at work would be if you had no way of communicating to the people around you. I hope to alleviate that very frustration from my preschoolers who are not yet verbally talking. With a portable communication device and a large communication board that can be seen and easily accessed by all of my preschool students and staff, language modeling with AAC can happen outside during engaging and active play. This would also allow my preschoolers to learn to utilize AAC while interacting with their peers, describing an idea, or asking for help from a teacher.
