David Sobel has said, "If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, then let us allow them to love the earth before we ask them to save it." This quote resonates with our sixth grade team of teachers as it is our hope that being able to participate in the Mountain Classroom experience will empower our students to become knowledgable stewards of the vast mountains that surround us in the White Mountain National Forest. They will develop an appreciation for the natural environment, learn more about its resources and how to protect it.
The students will grow as leaders as they work through the team buliding experience that a two day hiking excursion entails. They will extend their classroom community outside the boundaries of the traditional classroom setting; supporting and encouraging one another to meet their goals, taking turns leading their teams as they seek to meet the goal that they set at the outset of their Mountain Classroom experience.
Lastly, it is our hope that this experience builds a love of place for our students and they the develop a lifelong sense of belonging and responsiblity for the natural environment around them, whether that be in our local community, or wherever life's adventure brings them.
