Serving at a school where the majority of the kids receive free or reduced lunch means that sometimes mom or dad can't buy materials they're required to have, especially if there are younger siblings with longer materials lists. It's very important that in a math class a student be able to take notes that they can look at later for studying. Students who are not ready with the proper materials tend to be disengaged from the beginning and often give up because they find it hard to catch up. With composition notebooks and pencils readily available at their tables, the distraction of getting ready is removed and the student can focus on being engaged in learning. I want for each student to start the school year with their own composition notebook so that we can all focus on what is important: learning math. I have seen the difference between expecting them to bring their own materials and providing it for them. It's a small way of showing the students that a teacher cares about their learning and fosters a positive relationship between an educator and their students.
