During an after-school program for Girls Who Code, my 3rd through 5th grade girls will be learning how to code with a free resource, code.org, on the computer. After learning some basics, we will move to the Lego WeDo 2.0 materials. These materials will provide hands-on opportunities for the girls to first build and then program what they build to move and accomplish a task. After they have accomplished their task, reflected on their final product(s) and revised as necessary, the girls will present their projects to their classmates during the regular school day. After presenting their projects to their classmates, the girls will teach others how to use the WeDo kit and how to program using the Legos and their chrome books. By doing this, the girls have become empowered and confident in what they are doing. Furthermore, as they are teaching others, they are learning to a greater depth themselves. Through their excitement and encouragement, I hope to involve more girls in our after school Girls Who Code program. Through coding and building, students are learning math, science, and life skills of frustration, failure, perseverance, and success. Designing, building, and coding also teaches so many skills that are carried over into core subjects helping students to be more successful in their academic lives as well. The earlier girls start experiencing success in designing and computer programming the more likely they are to seek careers in computer science.
