Writing time was dreaded by my first grade students (and me), but now we can't wait for writing time. We have recently started writing mentor sentences that we imitate from real books and then create our own new sentences. But, we need those mentor books in our hands so we can look at them over and over again. It is amazing how our writing went from boring to exciting. The students can't wait to see what book we are reading each week and what they will be imitating. It is incredible to see what first grade writers can produce when they have authentic writers to help them to write. We hang their writing on the hallway walls and we see older students who are amazed by what they are reading. It has been incredible to see my little writers growing each week!!
