Our Turtle Sanctuary is a hands-on, outdoor classroom courtyard. There are various learning activities for the students to participate in and creative solutions for them to construct. Additionally, there are benches installed in the courtyard so that lessons can be conducted while the class is surrounded by nature. A shade awning to cover the benches and teaching area would help improve and increase student attention and focus, ultimately helping to increase their academic achievement. The students love being outdoors, learning, discovering, and exploring, but at certain times of the day the direct heat limits the outdoor classroom opportunities. A shade awning would allow lessons at any time of the day, therefore allowing this outdoor classroom space to be utilized at all times throughout the day. Many of the areas in the turtle sanctuary have been created by the students. One example of this is the kindness rocks that line the pathway that circles through the courtyard. Garden edging would help to preserve and keep their works of art in place, adding color and encouraging messages as students walk along the path. The students also contribute to this environment in many ways. One way that they do this is by watering the plants growing throughout the area. An outdoor sink would greatly increase the amount they could do in their given time frame, by cutting down on various trips indoors to refill watering cans. Also, due to the courtyard area also being a turtle sanctuary, students need to wash their hands after handling them. We have also installed a fish pond in the courtyard and a pond pump to circulate the water and help oxygenate it for the fish would also be very beneficial. The students enjoy watching and feeding the fish.
