There are many new Afghan refugees in America (and many other countries as well). You can help students understand the why by making it possible for them to read, NY Times Best Seller, The Refugee by Alan Gratz. By purchasing each child a book they can interact with the text as they are reading. They will be searching for key ideas to bring to a Socratic seminar. Through their preparation, we will engage in text-based protocols for deeper discussion. Hopefully, students will build empathy in the process. Every child in our class will read the book. The Learning Center will provide struggling readers with an audio version to make this accessible to all.
