The Google Expedition Virtual Reality Station will allow my students to travel beyond the four walls of my classroom. When students enter my classroom, my students can have the world at their fingertips. Instead of simply reading about immigration, students can visit Ellis Island and view the impact of immigration. Students who have never traveled outside of our town's boundary lines can now experience the world. Through the immersion of a virtual experience, students can be transported to different places, view different cultures, and gain a better grasp of the beauty and challenges that they will inherit as adults. The Google Expedition Virtual Reality Station will create an authentic learning experience that I strive to create. I want my classroom to restore the wonder, and curiosity that students once brought to our school. With Virtual Reality, every student that enters my classroom will have the opportunity to have a leveled playing field. Serving as an equalizer, virtual reality will allow underprivileged students the ability to even the playing field and build important background knowledge with the world around them. Students will make greater connections with the world around them, which will elicit richer conversation around my Social Studies content. Using virtual reality with allow me to infuse stronger 21st Century skills into my classroom. When students are submerged in the world, the ability to become social problem solvers, creative thinkers, and communicators and collaborators. This technology tool will help my students prepare for a more complex life outside of our little town, and prepare them for the 21st Century work environment.
