Flexible seating is a common trend in today's schools. It allows children the opportunity to choose how they best learn - in a traditional chair, on a wobble stool, at a standing desk, on an exercise ball, etc. Though flexible seating may seem like an issue of aesthetics, it is much more: it takes into account the body movement needs of 21st Century learners. I introduced this concept this school year with five exercise balls of varying sizes and crate stools I constructed. My students love the change. They are more engaged in their work , actively listen when necessary, and it eliminates the issue of students unsafely rocking up on one leg of a traditional chair. I am excited to increase the array of options with wobble stools and wiggle seats. These have been shown to help more active learners stay seated and engaged in learning activities for longer periods of time. This appeal to the different learning styles and preferences has helped my classroom community and student engagement. I look forward to continuing on this path. Our classroom environment matters!
