Our students are a lovable, lively group who require frequent movement. They struggle with traditional chairs and desks, but can make great learning gains when their physical needs are met. They are excited to be at school and enjoy learning new things, especially when working with their hands. I have seen them wiggle in their chairs and be unable to focus far too often, whereas with flexible seating such as therapy balls with stable bases and "wiggle seats", which can be put on any chair, these students will be able to relax and attend to the academic work they truly need. They would use flexible seating during the entire day, while writing, reading, doing math, science, and art. Our group often works on tasks that develop fine motor skills and reasoning with hands-on, tactile manipulatives and puzzles. Our students love to use their hands. These items, which are functional and help students both at school and in real life, are items that can be hard to obtain within a school budget. This group would benefit greatly from new items in these areas and we often find ourselves wishing for them! Feelings can get very big in our room. Mirrors will show our students their own faces and they can then name and regulate emotions. When they are feeling at peace, their bodies can be at ease and ready to learn. We work hard to help our young students in this area. Mirrors and the wonderful pop-up feelings book will help build a community of learners who know how to name their feelings and create peace through self-regulation. These items will enhance every aspect of our classroom, and I know that our students will be over the moon to have them. Thank you for your time and consideration!
