This project will be used with middle school science students. We will be working on creating a garden and developing new soil to grow food in. We will be learning sustainable farming techniques of compost and soil development as well as learning about nutrition. The students will learn how to test our soil, how to loosen the layers of the soil, and mix compost into the soil to amend it. After planting, we will learn about the importance of mulch and micro-organisms. Learning to take care of our soil, creating healthy plants to feed us, will allow us to have healthy bodies and improve our sustainability. More than 80% of our food is imported and we live two hours away from the nearest stoplight. We are very vulnerable to food shortages and need to be more self-sufficient.
