Edit
Students from math, biology, and health classes will work together on this project. Students will use the Petri dishes, agar, and applicators to swab areas around the school and partnered nursing home. After depositing the swab sample in the Petri dish, students will watch for micro developments. Students will observe bacteria growth. As Petri dishes are monitored to observe any bacteria growth, teachers in 3 different content areas will be providing background knowledge in math, biology, and health. The math objective will be to complete a statistics unit so that accurate results on percentages of bacteria growth can be reported correctly and appropriately in various graphs. The biology objective will be to classify the bacteria growth, learn about the bacteria life cycle, and understand cellular level of bacteria. The health objective will be to understand effects on human body and how bacteria growth and transfer can be prevented. The project culminates with students working with partners from area nursing home to present data, strategize on preventative processes with nursing home staff, and finish with a brief career class discussion with members of the nursing home staff on possible future careers for the students.
