I work at a middle school as a Resource Specialist Teacher for 7th and 8th grade. I teach an Academic Success Class, which consists of 10 students with IEPs. In this class, I am able to work on the materials that my students are struggling with in a small group setting, known as Success Circles. In these groups, students are expected to present their question and ask questions to help their groupmate answer the material they they are struggling with. The subject that my students need the most help with is Math, and they struggle on how to use a calculator. A resource that would greatly benefit my classroom is a classroom set of calculators, which will improve and help build my students' math skills. In Math, my students are currently learning how to find the volume of cone, cylinder, and sphere. In order to find the volumes of these shapes, students need to multiply by “π.” Most are able to find the answer in pi form but are unable to multiply by decimals, for they get confused where to place the decimal. In addition, on state tests, students are required to multiply by “π” button on the calculator, instead of multiplying by 3.14. Another concern is that students also struggle with multiplying with fractions, which are required for the volume of cone and sphere. Currently, when having to solve for volume, my students need to either use my phone or my aide's phone in order to use the calculator, which causes delays in groups when the 2 phones are being used.
