I would like to provide my elementary students with flexible seating options in my classroom. I am lucky to work at school that supports student-driven learning, and flexible seating is one way to give my students voice and choice. Ownership of their learning process will lead to a life-long love of learning, and allows me to not only educate my students for one year, but for life! Children need to move their bodies; they also need to learn to read, write, add and subtract. Why not do both simultaneously? This allows growth in not only mental strength but physical strength, as well. With flexible seating, students learn all of the state standards while also developing important life skills like self-control, autonomy, communication, and innovation. They get an age-appropriate amount of sensory input to support mental and metabolic development. Overall, research shows that flexible seating improves the learning process for all students!
