Our class learned this school year that the numbers of the butterfly population are on the decrease. We ordered a single use Cup of Caterpillars kit to watch them grow into beautiful butterflies through its cycle, and then we let them go. I have my students for two consecutive years and next school year I want to work with them and show that we can go to the next step of helping the butterfly world. Next year we want to grow our own garden, in the large empty space behind our classroom, so that the butterflies we grow will have a place and food to live and grow and reproduce right in our own backyard. Students will be responsible for planting, watering and growing the garden before we order new caterpillars. When the plants begin to bloom, we can order the butterflies knowing that they will not struggle to find food but can stay right here and even reproduce.
