I teach 10th grade English and Language Acquisition for English Language Learners. Approximately 40% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and our classroom is a diverse and vibrant place. The power of literature is in its ability to connect communities, to inspire readers, and to listen to stories that provoke change. My goal is to inspire these 10th graders to not only learn and love to read, but also to lift up their own voices and be aware of the impact they can make in their own community. The demographic at out high school is diverse, and the literature students read should celebrate that diversity, while also showing students that they can connect with the people they read about. School is about education, but it is also about empowering the next generation to find their voice and engage with the world around them in meaningful ways.
