Students come into 1st grade at a variety of different reading levels. Some students attended full day kindergarten, some attended half-day kindergarten, some were even home schooled so they all have different needs right away. Some students are still working on learning the letter names and sounds and then some students are already reading full sentences and books which makes teaching phonics a bit of a challenge. These leveled readers and phonics centers will drastically help engage student learning by giving the student exactly what he or she needs. If the student is at a lower reading level the book and center will match that level. If the student is at a higher level, the books and centers will continue to engage and challenge them rather than being "too easy". These leveled readers will be used everyday in personal student book bags, small groups, and even whole group instruction. The phonics centers will be a perfect tie into the phonics rules we are learning by actively engaging the student in a fun and positive way!
