The books in this order will help my students connect with characters and themes that are familiar to their lives. The free verse novels will help reluctant readers feel less pressure because the text seems shorter, there are fewer words on the page. The graphic novels will help entertain readers who tend to get bored when reading a novel without pictures. Both forms of novels will help engage readers who may have fallen by the wayside in other ELA classes; specifically students who do not speak English as their first language and students who have difficulty with reading skills. Using these books in Lit Circles will will unlock The students will be able to sample their books before making a decision. They will then be able to share their thoughts and connections with people in their group that are reading the same book.
