As my young students squirm in hard, traditional chairs that do not conform to their young lifestyles, I see that flexible seating an important addition to my young classroom. I want to provide a variety of alternative seating options for my students that allow them to move freely as they learn. Research shows that: "Simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially." Many of my active students prefer to stand or worse yet tilt in their traditional chairs. Flexible seating would give my students the opportunity to move as they should while learning.
