Our elementary school sits in the center of several subsidized housing complexes, so all students receive two free meals daily due to Federal Community Eligibility Provision.
Thirty-eight percent of the students have been identified as suffering from some sort of mental health issue. The problems range from PTSD, Autism spectrum, ADHD, ODD, Anxiety, Depression, and Trauma undiagnosed and untreated disorders. Other Health issues include diabetes, asthma, and childhood obesity. In the 2017-18 school year 46.50% of the students missed more than ten days of school.
These materials will make a difference in our students learning and emotional well-being. Our goal is to make our media center a place where students feel safe, loved and creative while also learning STEM concepts that they otherwise would not gain anywhere else.
The requested materials will be used so that our media center will have the following personalized learning stations:
1) reading centers
2) Robotics (Lego-Wedo Kit)
3) Production set (to film with the green screen our morning news show and other events. Students will also use the production kit to create videos on content from the classroom).
4) Maker Space
5) Puzzles
