The alternative lighting helps foster a calmer learning environment for our students. They will be able to come into the classroom where they can relax and learn to cope with some of the stress of the daily struggles that they face throughout the school day. Our goal in the classroom is to help motivate and encourage the students to be active learners while giving them a place to feel safe. As special education teachers in the resource/applied setting, we focus on teaching not only the curriculum but providing tools for our students with their emotional needs. Making sure that they are able to come into a calm environment ready to learn is such an important goal for our classrooms. Working with students who deal with emotional and behavioral needs can bring some extra stress to the classroom. As we begin a new school year, we want to start the year with creating a safe environment where they can learn to cope with some of their feelings and needs in a safe place.
