The thirty copies of Min Jin Lee's historical novel "Pachinko" will be used immediately and repeatedly. Students will research the complicated history between Korea and Japan, make connections to the modern day marginalization of people groups, write creatively, and analyze Lee's work deeply. To galvanize their learning, students will hear Min Jin Lee speak in Portland, Oregon. What is so remarkable about Lee's "Pachinko" is that is takes you someplace you've never been, perhaps never even learned about (turn of the century Korea and Japan) and connects with your experience right here, right now. This novel touches on universal themes and broadens our understanding of human nature.
