My students come from a high poverty area of California where the schools are losing more and more funding each year. Due to budget problems, some essential programs that many of us took for granted when we were in school have been cut. The students in my class range from ages 6 through 9. They have been expelled from their schools because of violent or disruptive behavior. They lack social skills and need ways to express their emotions other than through physical or verbal confrontations. Playing music with others is a great team building activity, a great way build confidence and self worth, and an outlet in which students can express themselves in a positive manner. Music also teaches self discipline, self control and responsibility. Most of these students have never had the opportunity to play a musical instrument or even be exposed to different kinds of music.
