Most of my students are academically challenged due to social and economic disadvantages and /or learning disabilities. Many are immigrants or first generation Americans.They may never have been to a museum of any kind, visited a zoo, or been to a beach. The information I share with my students is critical in helping them engage with and understand science and nature as they are generally distrustful at best and fearful or disgusted at worst by "nature". Building relationships and creating an atmosphere of trust in my classroom is foremost as many of my students do not have stable adult role models in their lives. Since I love science and am passionate about the natural world I take every opportunity to share that enthusiasm with my students and make them aware of how their personal choices and actions affect their environments and the planet as a whole.
