I have a class of Exceptional Students in the South Florida public school district. My students are between the ages of 3 and 5 and these are the foundation years of their lives. In my classroom, children learn to play, communicate their feelings and wants, they learn their letters, numbers and many social skills. However the most exceptional of my students, those who are not verbal, are often left out by their peers in activities and play, simply because they cannot communicate. In this curriculum we have what are called "centers" where students are encouraged to work in different themed areas under supervision. Many of our non-verbal students cannot communicate their needs with myself or the teacher's assistants in the classroom. This leads to frustration, crying, as the words that are within their hearts cannot come out. This project will help these students, and all my students. Using the IPads and an application called "Let Me Talk", students will be able to drag pictures around the screen and use them to make sentences that the iPad then says aloud. Since the students will be able to see and choose the things they need, and the iPad says the sentences aloud, they will be able to communicate with me, my assistants, and other students and tell us what they need. I can also use these tablets to teach all my students in a fun and interactive way.
