I use the Engineering is Elementary series with my STEAM classes. I like how it ties in to the students' science curriculum and takes a problem that exists in another area of the world and tells a story behind it. Students are then challenged to design a product that can help solve a problem related to the problem the character in the story faces. In our units, students have designed windmills, solar ovens, and oil-spill cleanup methods. In this project, students will use the Engineering Design Process to engineer their own drop packages--packages that can be safely dropped from an airplane and easily spotted once they've reached the ground. They will continue to see the problems children in other countries face and hopefully develop empathy for those conditions along the way. They will deepen their understanding of the various fields in engineering--in this case, package engineering--, while using their creative abilities to design a drop-package product. I just hope we don't have to climb up high and see what happens when we let go! Yikes!
