Giving students a choice of where to sit in the classroom is crucial to developing problem solving skills, on task learning, collaboration, and community. BUT....more than this is the fact that comfortable students are focused students. In turn, they will be more productive. Our classroom is student centered. What better way to support this than by incorporating flexible seating as part of our everyday routine. When a student is able to choose their own seat, they will feel a sense control and importance within their classroom environment. Picture an energetic learner. Many times that extra energy can get in the way of not only their own learning but the entire class as well. This would not occur in a classroom with a flexible seating arrangement. The energetic student would be able to work out their extra wiggles by choosing a wobble chair! That would be a win-win. I could go on and on about the benefits of flexible seating in a classroom environment, but what it boils down to is meeting every child's needs. What works for one, may not necessarily work for another. Incorporating flexible seating into our classroom would be one amazing way to meet the individual needs of my students!
