In a survey of parents, 88% of our families do not have a thermometer at home. Among families who had been in the US less than a year, not a single household had a thermometer. Of the 12% of families that had thermometers, almost all had received them free from the hospital after the birth of a child, several were not sure if they still worked or if they knew how to use them and others said they did not know it was important to use a thermometer after infanthood. One mother added, "once the child can talk, you can ask her if she has a fever." This project will put 150 digital thermometers in the hands of low-income families as well as giving them training on how to use them. Now, more than ever, our families need the tools and knowledge to make safe decisions about sending their children to school. At-home thermometers are necessary in order to follow school guidelines on returning to school fever-free. Access and knowledge on using thermometer will help keep our students, teachers and families safer this fall.
