Project LIT Community is a grass-roots organization that promotes access to diversity in literature and a love of reading. Each year, they recommend middle grade and young adult novels that reflect that diversity, but that are also well-written, culturally relevant, and have messages of empathy and empowerment. After hearing about this organization, I applied, and was approved, to begin the first Project Lit chapter here in Iowa! I plan on using the novels on this list for book club discussions, trivia competitions, and more. I hope to establish a student community of readers and leaders who will help run these meetings and events next school year.
