Switching my classroom from individual desks to tables will allow for more natural opportunities for collaborative learning. This will allow for more natural transitions into strategies like "Think, Write, Pair, Share", student led discussions, and group learning activities. It removes unnecessary transitions that bring with them distractions and interruptions. Collaboration improves student learning. It should be a strategy that is frequently used and easily accessible for all students. Proper room arrangement makes this much more accessible to my students. There are other benefits to table seating as well. Tables allow for fewer distractions from things inside the desk. Students will have only the materials they need for the activity available to them. We will not lose learning time looking for papers, books or other materials as those will be organized at a separate location.
