In 1998 the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and The National Audubon Society created the project known as "The Great Backyard Bird Count". This was the first online citizen science project to collect information and specific data on wild birds and to display those results in near real-time! As soon as we receive our bird feeder, we will install it right outside of our classroom window. This will allow my students to monitor the birds throughout the day. We will fill our feeder with the bird seed so that the birds in our area will come and return to our feeder! During the count, which takes place in February, we will explore what others are seeing in our area and/or around the world! We will share our bird photos by entering the photo contest, while also enjoying images pouring in from across the globe. Scientists and bird enthusiasts can learn a lot by knowing where birds are. Bird populations are dynamic; they are constantly in flux. No single scientist or team of scientists could hope to document and understand the complex distribution and movements of so many species in such a short time. That is why our classroom's data will be so important and special! Scientists will use information from the Great Backyard Bird Count, along with observations from other citizen-science projects, to get the “big picture” about what is happening to bird populations.
