These materials will best serve our students in that we can differentiate in numerous ways.
Interrupted learning is a serious issue with a number of our students. This broken path of learning leaves students fumbling through peculiar vocabulary, trying to connect it to past knowledge or events. The different reading levels of the materials allows access to almost all of the students. Some students are not proficient in their first languages, thus making reading English all the more challenging. Some students enter high school with poor reading skills, which impacts even math due to word problems.
Building background increases reading comprehension, giving students practice that leads to success.
Other students grasp the language at a rapid rate, and have high proficiency in their first language. The benefits of building background knowledge with the materials, as well as application to authentic "real world" relevance, in conjunction with classroom instruction, allows students to develop long term learning.
