We live in a beautiful state with wide open land and wonderful people. However, my students aren't exposed to a lot of differences among those they meet. It seems that diversity in our area means knowing someone who doesn't like the Boise State Broncos. Awareness of diversity is essential for dealing with biases. These novels will be the catalyst to an intentional focus on delving into the lives of kids with differences. My hope is that students will begin to make allowances for differences and lead them down a path of celebrating diversity.
