I have selected two additional titles to add to my curriculum this year that will provide my students with literature that grabs their attention and makes them want to read. Both of these novels will bring a wealth of discussion to the classroom, as well as compliment topics we address in the class. The historical fiction novel, Copper Sun by Sharon Draper, is about a 15-year-old girl who is taken from her village in Africa and brought to the Carolinas as a slave. My 8th graders will be interested in this text and I hope it encourages them to read more. In the novel, The Weirdo by Theodore Taylor, is about environmentalism provides the political backdrop for this story of the courage and self-acceptance. This story is about standing up for what you believe in, and I hope it inspires them to feel comfortable in their skins. I can't wait to share these books with my students. I know they will enjoy them!
