Our student-run doggie treat business proved to be a successful pilot project! We have repeat customers and therefore fill orders weekly for teachers and students. During the occupational development class, students manage the doggie treat orders and apply the skills they have learned in math, social skills, and english/language arts classes. On a typical day, tasks include checking the Google order forms and counting orders, making the dough (5 natural ingredients), rolling out dough and cutting treats, baking, weighing 1/2 bags and packaging for sale, and selling to customers. What is so magical about our doggie treat business? There are a wide range of tasks necessary to execute the operation, allowing students with all abilities the opportunity to contribute and feel successful at their jobs. Integral supplies for our project, like a new cash register, will fuel our evolving business as students build valuable vocational skills through real life experiences! Currently, we have a cash box which is cumbersome and not student-user friendly. We also have flimsy scale. A new food scale and cash register will help students gain true on-the-job training transferable to the workforce. Our dog bone treat cutters have nearly seen their last cut of dough due to the success of our business. New treat cutters and packaging will see us through an even more amazing and fun year selling our delicious, all-natural bones. Dogs can't resist and students love to deliver the goods!
