Home and Hospital teachers provide instruction one on one and have the luxury of creating lessons that meet the specific needs of their homebound students. As an H & H teacher I read "Bless Me Ultima", by Rudolfo Anaya about a culandera, a healer, with a tenth grader whose first language is Spanish. The student relished the Spanish language and Mexican culture in the novel, and it generated a writing project. It turned out her grandmother was a culandera in Mexico and this student wrote a comparison of her grandmother with the fictional Ultima. They both faced resistance as well as acceptance in their rural communities. In addition, graphic novels including 'Guts", by Raina Telgemeier and :Awkward", by Svetlana Chmakova deal brilliantly with outsiders in middle school, their dilemmas and their triumphs. Parents are amazed to see their reluctant readers so engaged in reading!
