These requested materials would allow my building to provide listening centers throughout the classrooms and help further promote literacy skills with students. Currently, my classrooms are not equipped with listening centers. Over the years, our listening devices have broken, and we, unfortunately, have not had the resources to replace them. The children love to hear stories read to them, which is an important part of their education and development. In the past, listening centers provided a freedom and autonomy for children to hear and follow along with their favorite stories at different times of the day. With your help, I am excited to reimplement this important resource into my classrooms. Exposing children to many forms of early literacy skills makes it easier for children to learn to read. Children who listen and follow along with the text have more opportunities to develop skills such as: critical listening skills, learning unfamiliar words, and exposure to fluent reading. Children who begin school with these skills have an advantage that carries with them throughout their school years. At my school, students have limited opportunities throughout the day to hear stories as teachers and volunteers read in group and individualized settings. However, with your help reintroducing listening centers into the classrooms, my students would have further opportunities to develop their literacy skills and gain an enhanced autonomy and enjoyment of reading.
