My Students… I work as the music teacher and chamber choir leader in Newark, NJ. We are charter school committed to serving children by building an uncommon school where students partake of a rigorous, 11-month, extended-day academic program. This program aims to give students the means to overcome the achievement gap and beat the odds in school and in life. Our students—most of whom are low-income and come into our school at least a few years below grade level—stay in school longer than their district school peers, push themselves to the highest levels academically, and believe deeply in the core values that make our learning community safe. This year is the first year we have had an in-school music class with very high rigor (preparing for the AP Music Theory Exam), with master classes, and a choir, but we do not have a piano for the students to practice, and for me or the music students to accompany the choir.
