This is my first attempt at diversifying the book shelves in my speech therapy room. As a Speech-Language Pathologist working with many children, I am committed to having diverse bookshelves. I want my students to see themselves and their friends reflected in the books that we read OUTLOUD as they practice new sound patterns. I want the message to children from all backgrounds that learn my space to be that I use materials that are inviting and representative, like the world around us. I do not want anyone to feel left out as I try to build a trusting relationship with them and change their speaking patterns. These are quality books selected specifically to be used in speech therapy with multiple opportunities for practice and enlightenment. I like independent picture books for reading OUTLOUD so they can put their cognitive energy into forming new sounds rather than trying to figure out the words they are reading. They can work on speaking and reading skills at the same time, while immersed in artful diverse books.
