These supplies will help my students feel safe and comfortable in the space that is used for counseling. The goal is for them to be relaxed and in an environment where they can practice the skills that are being taught. The space needs to be homey and a place that they could encounter in the real world versus sitting at a desk. A counseling room should feel like a living room. Couches and lamps will help the room feel more comfortable so the fluorescent lights don’t need to be turned on. Since the students will be on couches, having lap boards to use for writing will be essential. Pictures on the walls give the room color and make it more welcoming. A rug and a coffee table help the room feel like the students are sitting in a living room. For students that I work with that are on the autism spectrum, it will make being able to transfer skills in similar settings. An atmosphere like this will help them to be able to transfer the skills into real world situations because they will be practicing them in an environment that is more real world. Giving these students a place that feels welcoming and homey will help them be more accepting to the lessons that are being provided. A safe environment is important for these students that live in a world of chaos.
