Our school is building a reading incentive program that is embedded in good-natured competition. We launched the program in the fall, challenging the kids to read all of the books on their grade level lists. They have all school year to try to read every book before the big competition in May! The program is working and our students are checking out books and writing summaries like never before.
However, we need to buy new books each year and our building simply does not have the funds to continue with this engaging incentive program for at-home reading. If we receive funding for this project, we will provide each classroom teacher with at least one set of these award-winning books so that students could check them out from their classrooms.
The research abounds: Reading at least fifteen minutes per day is critical for students to make adequate growth in reading. This incentive program has done more to encourage students to engage in reading for fun on their own time than anything I have ever done. Please consider contributing to the future of these incredible kids -- buy them some books!
