My students voted on reading the memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings this semester. This book describes the early years of Maya Angelou; it is a coming-of-age story that illustrates how strength of character and a love of literature can help overcome racism and trauma. This book will not only service my students' reading needs and interests but also many students for years to come! The set will be housed in our book room. This school year (during a global pandemic) students REALLY need reading material that's motivating.
