Time and time again I have seen my students struggle to navigate informational text. Creating research projects that involve using informational text has helped somewhat, but lacks the engagement that helps to make the content stick with students. Many of you will have heard of Escape Rooms, where participants must solve puzzles in order to escape a room. With the backpacks, locks, and UV writing materials I have requested, my goal is to create “Breakout” kits in which my classes will have to solve social studies themed puzzles, using textbooks and other informational materials in order to find the combinations and breakout of my classroom challenge. Through this I hope to bring the excitement the students have for science into the social studies classroom. Though I am getting these Breakout materials for social studies, I will also be able to use the same supplies in all other content areas. Breakout kits can be used for absolutely anything from art to math and language arts.
