I am a first year teacher, and while I have worked hard to supply my students with everything they need to be successful, one challenge we are having is a lack of a community rug area. Currently, we are using a $10 outdoor carpet for our group seating area. The rug is filthy, is tugged and moved easily, and sheds continuously. It has several holes in it, and is not comfortable for students. I am hoping to provide the students with a more welcoming and inviting community area, where we can come together as a team. Having a comfortable carpet, flexible seating options, and a storage bin to keep the new seating nice for years to come would be a tremendous help! I also believe having these resources available for the students would boost their independent work time and allow them to make more progress in their independent reading time. Although each student has their own desk, I believe that work done outside of the traditional seating can often be more impactful, as the students feel more freedom to express themselves. I am hoping that with different seating options around the room, students will see the classroom as a bigger and more accessible place for them to explore and learn.
