My students are from a small town in South Carolina. Many have never been outside of the town, have never seen the mountains or even the ocean. Students are yearning for the opportunity to read- but to read stories that are more "modern" that they can relate to. Many have trouble with American Lit because they don't feel that the novels provided are ones they cannot relate to because the characters do not look like, talk like, or sound like them. We will be reading the novel as a whole-group- together and individually. Students will be able to read and write in response to the novels, if purchased.
