Despite the benefits and possibilities that technology brings to the classroom, have you noticed that our children's social world is beginning to deteriorate? I have served my community as a teacher for over 20 years and in the past 3 years have noticed a dramatic difference in the social well being of our students. It seems that our students spend more time in conflict with each other and with the teacher. This year we have instituted mindfulness techniques however, the struggle is real and students are more in need of help than ever. Our students struggle with respect, communication, and self-help skills on a daily basis and it is beginning to affect their ability to successfully have relationships with other students and adults as well as to learn. These needs must be met for a child to be able to successfully engage in any learning activity within the classroom. I will use the Australian program DRUMBEAT from Holyoake to teach our students. DRUMBEAT is an acronym for Discovering Relationships Using Music, Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes and Thoughts. This program is an evidence-based social emotional learning program. These beautiful tubano drums are not only fun to play, but provide a holistic, organic learning experience incorporating the healing effects of the drum while learning about social discipline. By using this program with my entire school, I hope to make a difference in our community and school climate. The students are motivated and quick learners that enjoy being engaged. As a music teacher, I see their creativity shine through best when the social piece is in place. Music is a team effort and our students are talented and creative yet struggle to make music!
