This year, I am taking a new approach to teaching in my English class. I am using graphic novels as a central foundation to the major concepts, themes, and analysis that we do together as a class. While we have the core novels selected, I also plan to broaden my students' exposure to culturally-sustaining reading through numerous different options for high-interest, diverse, graphic novels to be used in book clubs. This project will provide 20 copies of a specific, critically-acclaimed, graphic novel (Persepolis) for my students as a choice for their student-driven books clubs. It is my desire to not just compel my students to critically read, write, listen, and speak... but to foster a life-long love of reading in the process. This project helps me move forward with that goal.
