My classroom philosophy is deeply rooted in the value of experiential learning. Since taking 200 students around the world would be a challenge, I strive to create opportunities for students to interact with history on multiple levels that bring the cultures we are reading about to life. Experiencing history through multi-media projects and simulations creates authentic engagement and deepens understanding. These supplies will be used for a variety of intentionally designed learning experiences. First, my 6th grade kiddos will experience an early humans cave painting day. The lights will dim, students will use outlines of animals, charcoal, and pastels to draft images on large butcher paper sheets to turn our room into the Lascaux caves. My 7th graders will then experience Japanese culture day in which they will learn about the cultural significance of origami, have opportunities to create their own origami, and use chopsticks to try pick up grains of rice. Additional supplies will be used for other art projects throughout the school year. These opportunities will enhance all of my students' understanding in ways that simply reading and analyzing cannot do alone.
