Capturing the attention of middle school students to engage and become curious about their government is essential to the development of our future citizens. I have used graphic novels with my middle school students to spur this engagement. This book allows students to take a deep dive into the interworkings of the Constitutional Convention to understand how our government developed. The use of vivid imagery coupled with active word choice and dialogue in this text spurs students to engage in conversations that support their ability to understand the foundational document of our nation, The Constitution. Students will be using this text both in-class as part of their independent reading work. As students engage in each section of the text, they will engage in Socratic Seminars designed to model civic dialogue and engagement. Students will also use this text to develop a problem based project titled: How do I see America? This project asks students to use their constitutional understanding coupled with photography to create a photo essay to explain their viewpoints and perspectives about America. This graphic novel allows students to understand the foundational history while also aiding in the development of their own ideas about government and civics.
